A month passed and nothing; each time Roger asked Keller a question, he’d answer with a snide “just stand fast.” As the month passed, Max finally returned from his injuries. It seemed that the Commander had been awaiting Max’s return before sending them on any other missions. One morning, Keller assembled the men in the mess room, which contained a sink, a refrigerator, and a small fireplace that they used to heat their food. The four men ate breakfast together every day and as they finished their meals, Keller approached them. “Gentlemen, we will caucus tonight at 1800 to discuss tomorrow’s actions.” All four of the men knew that this type of vague description meant that the actions were going to be hostile and unfriendly, as well as very hush-hush. They all knew that should something happen to either of them, their families would be fed some line of crap and they’d never learn the truth. Roger pictured his mother getting the false news that he’d been killed in some friendly fire accident, or that he gallantly jumped on a grenade to save his platoon; to him this potential act of lies was deceitful and just plain wrong.
